Who We Are
Second Helpings is a nonprofit food rescue organization dedicated to eliminating hunger across the South Carolina Lowcountry. Since 1992, we’ve partnered with grocery stores, retailers, farmers, and community donors to rescue fresh, healthy food that would otherwise go to waste.
What We Do
Our Hilton Head Truck Rescue Routes are currently managed by local volunteers. If you are interested in more information about rescue opportunities on Hilton Head and how to get involved, please Respond to the Hilton Head Truck Opportunity and a Second Helpings staff member will reach out to share more information. Thank you for your interest in helping us reduce food insecurity and food waste in our beautiful Lowcountry!
More about our Truck Rescue Routes:
Volunteers serve as part of a truck crew helping load rescued food from donors, sort and organize items on the truck, and deliver those donations to local food pantries, shelters, and community organizations. Every route is a little different, but each one directly helps reduce food waste while increasing access to healthy food in our community.
This is a hands-on, team-based volunteer experience and a great opportunity to see the direct impact of food rescue in action.
Physical Requirements:
This role involves moderate physical activity. Volunteers should be comfortable standing for extended periods of time and repeatedly lifting grocery crates, boxes, and bags of food. Some items may weigh up to 50 pounds, although not every volunteer is required to lift the heaviest items. Because food rescue involves frequent loading and unloading, volunteers should be prepared for repeated lifting and movement.
Volunteers must also be comfortable getting in and out of a 16-foot box truck multiple times throughout the route as food is collected and delivered.
Routes operate year-round and in all weather conditions, so volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather.
