Fresh Produce Distributions

Who We Are

Second Helpings is a nonprofit food rescue organization dedicated to eliminating hunger across the South Carolina Lowcountry. Since 1992, we’ve partnered with grocery stores, retailers, farmers, and community donors to rescue fresh, healthy food that would otherwise go to waste.

What We Do

Through our Healthy Food Initiative, Second Helpings purchases fresh produce and lean proteins to supplement the rescued food we distribute to our partner food pantries across the Lowcountry. Volunteers play an important role in helping ensure these healthy foods reach neighbors in need.

Volunteers assist with sorting, packing, and distributing fresh produce and proteins during our community distributions. This is a hands-on, team-oriented opportunity where volunteers work together to prepare grocery-style bags of fresh food and help get them into the hands of local families and partner agencies.

Distributions take place outdoors, so volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather.

Some distributions require a truck driver and crew member to meet at the site to pick up and distribute additional produce to agencies.

Physical Requirements:
This role involves light to moderate physical activity. Volunteers should be comfortable standing for extended periods of time and repeatedly lifting and packing grocery-size bags of produce. Some produce boxes or bags may weigh up to 50 pounds, although not all volunteers are expected to lift the heaviest items. Because produce is bulky and the work involves repeated motion, volunteers should be prepared for an active volunteer experience.
