Volunteer: Port Royal Farmer's Market Volunteer

Helping at the Farmer's Market is a great experience! Each shift requires 2 volunteers. We will help to make sure that each pair has a new and an experienced volunteer to help. One volunteer must be able to coordinate the pick up of the equipment and help carry/set up a canopy in addition to loading some produce in their vehicle for delivery at the end of the event.

After signing up for the first time, a Second Helpings volunteer will reach out to share more information!

Every Saturday, Second Helpings hosts a table at the Port Royal Farmers Market to collect fresh produce from farmers, accept cash and packaged food donations, share information about our mission, and engage potential volunteers.

Two volunteers staff the table each week from 8:00 AM to noon, handling a simple setup (canopy, table, brochures- must be picked up at local storage unit) and breakdown at closing. Donations typically include 100+ lbs of produce and an average of $90 in contributions, all of which directly support our hunger-relief work. Produce donations are dropped off at Help of Beaufort and the setup must be returned to storage. It’s a fun, rewarding way to meet the community and share the Second Helpings story—and the generosity we see every week is inspiring.

Volunteer: Tourist Food Rescue Heroes

Through our Tourist Food Rescue (TFR) program, Second Helpings collects leftover, usable food from local vacation properties to keep it out of landfills and redirect it to our partner agencies across the Lowcountry. Volunteers play a critical role in helping ensure this food is recovered and shared with neighbors in need.

On your shift date, you will report to our office at 11a Marina Side Drive, Hilton Head, and we will give you the route and directions to pick up the donations. Our TFR volunteers will serve as drivers and crew members, working together to pick up donated food from designated tourist locations and transport it to food pantries on Hilton Head.

Routes take place outdoors and involve travel between locations, so volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather and be comfortable working in a mobile environment.

Physical Requirements: This role involves light to moderate physical activity. Volunteers must be comfortable driving and getting in and out of a van, lifting and moving bags or boxes of food, and working on their feet for periods of time.
